Faced such a problem: the drive began to copy and read DVD / CD discs very slowly. One DVD was copied for about an hour. Naturally, I immediately thought that Windows or a drive is buggy, because drives are normal. Windows did not want to reinstall, because a lot of programs and data did not want to lose. And laziness to be honest. He began to dig in search of truth. Basically the advice came down to the fact that you need to install Windows or change the drive. But then the solution was found.
As it turned out for the primary IDE channel, I had the “PIO only” mode. And when you choose DMA, it is still PIO.
So, the solution:
My computer - Properties. “Hardware” tab - Device Manager.
IDE ATA / ATAPI - Controllers - Primary IDE channel (I had “only PIO” on it). Delete. Reboot the computer. And, voila, he finds the drive again and sets the DMA mode.

As written on the site Microsoft is a temporary solution. There was another solution with editing the registry, but it worked for me. Now DVD copies in 4-6 minutes.
It may be useful to someone.
