How not to learn English words

The story of how I learned English and tried to teach others.

Prehistory

I finally spoke in English!

I managed to break through the wall from the realm of written English to the realm of conversational. I did it thanks to my favorite game StarCraft. I myself have not played for a long time, but, as a real fan, I have been looking at English reviews of the best tournament battles for two years now. The HDStarcraft commentator is doing great with this task: he speaks very quickly, very much, very interesting. I was helped by my wild interest in this game and the inability to include subtitles. At first it was just fun to watch, even though almost nothing was clear, except for the names of the buildings. Now I understand everything he says. Apparently, I was too used to his talk, because when I look at other commentators, I’m not so comfortable and everything is not clear.

Teach others!

In the wake of my progress, I began to create a program for learning English words by ear, " Sound Cards ." Now I have added more than 10 categories and more than 300 words to it. But now I suddenly realized that the program was not reaching its goal. Yes, everything is conceived correctly: instead of words - their pronunciation with transcription, instead of translation - pictures. You can learn English like a child. But!
')
The study of words on the list, the study of a set of words without a meaningful bundle (even if from the same category) is an ineffective method. For example, I passed a hundred times the category of fruits and berries, I guess the pictures are excellent, and when I saw a black currant in the garden, I remembered half a minute how it was called in English ...

Nothing happened?

I see four main mistakes when learning English words:
  1. Attempt to learn words list.
  2. Attempt to learn unrelated words.
  3. Attempting to learn more than N words at a time (just 100 / N% of attention for each word)
  4. Attempt to learn uninteresting and unnecessary words.

Of course, I have ideas on how to increase the effectiveness of the program.
For example, for each word make a few voices and a few pictures.
When asked to play a random entry, show a random picture.
Then it will be impossible to get used to the correspondences between intonations and pictures.
You can hear more different variations of the word.

You can also add a microphone function to encourage the user to pronounce words. This is highly recommended, but, according to my observations, almost never practiced.

But ... None of these methods solves the main problem.

Conclusion

I know from my own experience that the most effective way to learn new words is to read interesting books and watch interesting videos. Necessarily interesting. And how to implement this in the format of my program, I can not imagine. And I don’t know how to make the study of words really effective. I'm at a dead end.

What to do?
