4G on the smartphone. Personal experience

4G LTE - a new generation of communication ( ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/4g ), which allows you to achieve unprecedented speeds of the mobile Internet. Megaphone was the first in Russia to make use of 4G on smartphones possible ( my note on this ). I tried this technology - all July I had with me a special version of the Samsung Galaxy S III 4G smartphone .

In the center of Moscow, 4G operates at fantastic speeds: the average speed of reception and transmission is 25 Mbit / s,

The maximum recorded reception speed is 55 Mbps. At such speeds on a smartphone, it becomes possible to do what you could normally afford only when connected via wi-fi: watch and upload videos, install programs from the Market, and just any actions with the Internet start to be performed almost instantly. Instagram videos are uploaded faster than they are processed, and photo upload speed is measured in fractions of a second.

')

On Red Square, SpeedTest showed speed from 25 to 35 Mbit / s on reception on different days, more than 20 Mbit / s on transmission.

But the same speed record, which was recorded at the Manege Square.

Multiple measurements in a row.

During this month, I visited the center of Moscow five times, usually on weekends or in the evening, but once I ended up at the Tretyakov and Bolotnaya squares in the morning on workday. To my surprise, the 4G speed did not exceed 5 Mbit / s. Most likely the reason is that many offices in the center use 4G from Megaphone as a cheap Internet service.

4G in the center works fine on the street, but in buildings there is often no 4G or the signal is very weak.

I, in Sviblovo, have the following situation with 4G at Megaphone: at home on the 17th floor, if you put your hand out of the window with the phone, the signal level is three "sticks" of four (-82dBm), while the speed floats from 20 to 5 Mbit / s. If you move away from the window to the far end of the room, the signal level decreases to one “stick” (-114dBm), while the speed is only 2-3 Mbit / s. At work, on the one hand, the 4G building exists and works at very high speeds, on the other hand, just where my office is located, there is neither 4G nor 3G. Only dull edge.

Another problem is temporary failures. Sometimes data transfer is interrupted for a few seconds. The screenshot clearly shows that the Internet was first and the speed was high, and then he died, he was not 10-15 seconds, and then he appeared again.

The smartphone Samsung Galaxy S III 4G can not be forced to put 4G mode. Only auto selection.

4G only works for data transfer. When an incoming or outgoing call, the smartphone automatically switches to 3G. It happens instantly, there are no delays.

Alas, in 4G mode and more or less active use, the battery lasts only eight hours. And with the 4G, GPS, WI-FI turned off, this SGS III special version works less than a day.

Another interesting observation. It turns out that MegaFon has excellent 3G at the stations of the Moscow metro. On my orange branch at each station from Sviblovo to the center there was 3G and speed in the region of 5 Mbit / s. Moreover, MTS has only 2G everywhere on the same site, except for Prospect Mira, and it does not always work.

A big plus of 4G in Russian conditions - while 4G devices are not very many, the Internet works well at mass events, where 2G and 3G are choked by the number of people who want to go online. It's great that now Megafon for 4G-Internet has exactly the same tariffs as for 3G / 2G: moscow.megafon.ru/internet .

Today, 4G on a smartphone can be very interesting for those who need to transfer large amounts of information on the way, those who are willing to sacrifice the working time of the smartphone for the very fast Internet, and those who want to stay with the mobile Internet at public events.
