What Sony thinks about MacBook Air

Comparing ultraportable Macbook Air and Sony TZ models, Steve Jobs pointed out a number of TZ flaws, among which he emphasized the too small keyboard and screen, as well as the device’s too large thickness. It’s Sony’s turn to express its opinion on the new Apple MacBook Air .

Mike Abery, senior vice president of VAIO's products, agreed that the engineers did the impossible to create a laptop of such small thickness. However, such a device has already been developed by Sony long before the Air.

Her laptop called X505, released in 2004, had a carbon fiber body and a thickness of 0.75 cm in the thinnest part (the thickness of Apple Air is 4 mm). That model was accepted by users without much enthusiasm, and the researchers concluded that thickness is not the most important indicator of a laptop. Creating a thin device, the manufacturer must sacrifice performance. Buyers, as a rule, do not welcome such experiments.

To achieve the coveted 4 mm, Apple had to abandon the built-in optical drive. In terms of ease of use, this step is inappropriate. This can be objected and brought to the proof of the fact that today there are many new technologies, for example, Internet access channels with greater bandwidth, more spacious hard drives, as well as the ability to store data on remote HDDs and receive data wirelessly N.

Since the advent of the X505, the model has evolved into TZ series notebooks, equipped with LED arrays, a small, handy keyboard, a large number of ports and connectors, and built-in support for 3G. From this point of view, Sony is much closer to the needs and requirements of modern users.

When a reporter from the NYTimes newspaper asked Jobs for an opinion about the limited free space on the Apple Air hard drive, Jobs said: "Perhaps this laptop is not made for you." This begs a legitimate question: for whom is this laptop made? Most likely, the only suitable audience - those for whom the design of the device is most important. In addition, many do not hesitate to recognize that the new laptop is clearly not enough built-in 3G.

All who had the opportunity to see it and get acquainted with its characteristics arise for which niche of the modern market could suit Air. Probably, some users will want to buy it as an expensive stylish toy, despite obvious shortcomings.

Despite the fact that Apple is positioning the MacBook Air as the world's thinnest laptop, a CNET source cites a number of facts that refute the statement of Steve Jobs.

Mitsubishi pedion

So, in 1997, Mitsubishi and HP introduced a model of ultra-thin laptop called Pedion. Its thickness was only 0.72 inches or 1.82 cm, which is slightly less than 0.76 inches (1.92 cm) for the MacBook Air. Mitsubishi Pedion had a 12-inch screen and worked under control of the Pentium MMX 233MHz processor, the laptop case was made of magnesium alloy. Mitsubishi Pedion cost 6 thousand dollars.

Sharp Actius MM10

The second model is by far the record holder for fineness. Laptop Sharp Actius MM10, released in 2003, has a thickness of only 0.54 inches or 1.37 cm. This laptop had a 15GB hard drive, 256MB of RAM and was running a Crusoe 1GHz processor. The model cost 1500 dollars.
