Two and a half years later, after the release of elementary OS, codenamed “Jupiter,” a new version came out , codenamed “Luna”. The distribution is based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS , so there will be no compatibility problems with the Ubuntu 12.04 package base.
The first version of elementary OS was based on Ubuntu 10.10 and had the GNOME 2 desktop environment. Luna already uses GTK3 + and GNOME 3.
The distribution includes the following applications: Software own project development elementary OS:
Pantheon Desktop Shell
Gala window manager
Pantheon Terminal emulator
Pantheon Files File Manager
Scratch text editor
Noise Music Player (renamed to Music)
As well as third-party applications that are part of the distribution:
Midori Browser
Geary Email Client
Empathy IM Client
Photo Manager Shotwell
The main focus of the distribution is on design and minimal resource consumption. The developers claim that 512M of RAM will be enough for the normal operation of the system. ')
Although the system is easy to use, it looks presentable, however, some applications still have to be installed by yourself (for example, office, GIMP), although this is more of a plus, because you have a choice. The distribution is quite popular, currently ranks 28th in the popularity rating of distros on distrowatch.com for the last month.
