New Apple on MacWorld-2008: the world's thinnest laptop, portable "hard drive" and other ...

At the MacWorld 2008 conference, Apple introduced a new laptop, a portable hard drive, an updated iPhone firmware, and a number of other new products. This is reported by AFP .

MacBook Air is the world's thinnest notebook with no optical disc (available separately), but a full 13-inch display (1280 by 800 pixels). The thickness of the device varies from 4 to 19 mm.

In addition, the MacBook Air is equipped with a webcam, 80 GB HDD, an extended touch pad and a full keyboard. A slow “hard disk” can be replaced with a very expensive 64-gigabyte SSD-drive, if desired.

As a processor, the MacBook Air uses Core 2 Duo 1.6 or 1.8 GHz. The new product does not have a regular network adapter, but there is WiFi (802.11n) and BlueTooth 2.1.

The disadvantages of new items include the lack of a LAN, a FireWire port, and the presence of only one USB port, which makes the work very inconvenient. Also worth noting is the traditional for Apple unreasonably high price - in Europe, this laptop will cost $ 1,000 more than in the US.

Users have already expressed their disappointment in numerous forums: "beautiful, as always with Apple, but extremely stupid and very expensive."

The cost of MacBook Air in the United States will be 1800-3100 dollars, in Europe 2600-4500 dollars. On sale it will appear in two weeks.

In addition, Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the Time Capsule wireless archiving system, which will allow home users to create backup copies of data. Time Capsule will contain 500 or 1000 gigabyte HDDs. The price in the USA will make 300 and 500 dollars accordingly.

It was also announced about the imminent release of a new firmware for the iPhone. Also released will be a set of SDK (Software Development Kit) to create third-party applications that can fully work with this communicator.

According to Jobs, Apple managed to sell 4 million iPhones.
