iPhone comes to replace BlackBerry in large corporations

The corporate mail client and Lotus Notes collaboration software will be ported to the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch smartphones, from where the software will work through the IBM Domino mail server. This agreement was signed between IBM and Apple - two competitors of Microsoft. The new software and hardware platform looks very promising in terms of competition with Microsoft products in the corporate market. It should be noted that the iPhone can now work through Microsoft Exchange, but almost no one uses this function.

The official announcement of Lotus Notes on the iPhone is likely to take place at the Lotusphere conference next week in Orlando. However, some details of the announcement are already known. It is reported that the new software will be free for anyone who already has a license for Lotus, and for new users, prices start at $ 39 per year.

In addition, IBM is planning to release Lotus Notes and a free office suite Lotus Symphony on the Macintosh platform. Thus, Apple computers have every chance to conquer the corporate environment. The main thing is that there should be corporations that will agree to such exotic things.

In the corporate world, there are about 135 million users of programs from the Lotus package, so this partnership has the potential to greatly increase the number of iPhone smartphone users, especially if corporations start mass purchases of devices for their employees, as they now distribute standard BlackBerry PDAs from Research in Motion. Basically, the iPhone is no worse.

Decades ago, IBM and Apple were principled competitors. There was no question of any cooperation between them, especially in the matter of software development, because the IBM PC and Macintosh platforms were completely incompatible with each other. It is interesting to observe how the situation changed several decades later. Now IBM and Apple have a lot in common.
