UNIGINE Open Air 2013. Photo report

240 participants, 2 days, 12 lectures, 3 buckets of whiskey, 63 kilograms of kebabs, 5 kW of sound - UNIGINE Open Air 2013 passed under Tomsk. This is an open-air conference dedicated to 3D graphics technology and the development of computer games.

This year we held open-air for the second time, and it became even bigger and more versatile: the number of participants increased, their geography expanded, and more reports became available. We were happy to talk with game developers from Tomsk, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Barnaul, Biysk, Krasnoyarsk, Kemerovo, Voronezh and other cities!
The participants were reluctant to leave, and then wrote to us that in the city they missed the open-air atmosphere. Damn nice to say.

What are they talking about?

The highlight of the program was the reports of the Director General of Sphinx Technologies, Andrey Aksenov shodan (Voronezh). On the first day, Andrew very inspiringly argued that in reality there are no difficult tasks, in the worst case, the tasks can be long or tedious. Among other things, he argued that the brain is completely necessary for a programmer, only “a light natural inclination and 10-15 years of training” is required. The second report was about low-level code optimizations (by the way, it had to be split into two parts, because all the useful information in the allotted time did not fit).

Ivan Avdeev w23 (Novosibirsk) told about the secrets of the demoscene, talking about the technology of creating 3D demos of 64 KB, 4 KB and even 256 bytes!

The report flowed smoothly into “half-drunk shading coding,” as one of the open-air participants put it. It looked like this: Ivan, in the light of stars and monitors, wrote a 3D demo from scratch, shodan commented on what is happening: “I think someone is reinventing bilinear texture filtering ...”, the audience watched entrancedly.

Alexander Pogrebnyak (Novosibirsk), Technical Director of Alawar Entertainment, spoke about the technologies of casual games and how to earn them.

The server programmer of the Genius Games Ruslan Mashukov (Krasnoyarsk) told about the technical stages of Action MMO development.

Pavel Nakaznenko (Krasnoyarsk), a multi-programmer, shared his experience, pain and joys of porting the Unreal Engine 3 to FLASH.

UNIGINE specialists, of course, also shared their knowledge and experience. Our technical director Alexander Zapryagayev (Frustum) told about the specifics of creating a 3D engine for huge virtual worlds.

General Director Denis Shergin binstream introduced the participants to the basics of 3D graphics "on the fingers."

Anna Chaplinskaya told about the role and pain of the build engineer in game dev.

3D artist David Vidiger broke the standing ovation, telling and showing voxel modeling in 3D-Coat. It was not limited to reports, the guys were caught with different questions during the breaks.

Reports on open-air were not only on technical topics. Andrei Viktorov, co-founder of Fate Studio (Novosibirsk), spoke about the hard life of small studios, independently developing games.

Natalya Ogloblina (Barnaul), CEO of Alawar Stargaze, discusses how gaming techniques can be used in project management.

Presentations of the reports, shown and not shown on the open-air due to the bright sun, can be viewed here .

Fun part

In their free time, participants unloaded their minds by playing volleyball / badminton / frisbee or simply sunbathing.

Closer to the night of the first day, when all the reports ended, the whiskey-party began, which continued with a drum'n'bass party. Those who did not want to dance, went to watch the coding of shaders, draw pictures with light (freeze light), or scattered around fires by interests.

For example, by the evening of the first day I looked something like this ...

This year, as an experiment, we organized a new platform - a fun zone where you could plunge into virtual reality with the help of Oculus Rift, play Battle City, Super Mario Bros or Contra on the NES emulator, chop off with friends in Mortal Kombat 9 on PlayStation 3

By the way, the MK fans on the second day took part in the mini-tournament, its winner as a prize received a cool open-air T-shirt.

The experiment with the fun-zone was a success: it was almost always crowded and fun. For the next open-air, think of something else!

UNIGINE Open Air 2014

We are already making ambitious plans for the next year! The main idea is to make open-air cover the entire production cycle of games. To do this, we are going to organize several lecture sites and increase the number of reports that would be of interest to artists and QA engineers.
Plan your trip to Tomsk for July 2014!
