Mandriva and Turbolinux united against Ubuntu

Linux-based software developers — Mandriva and Turbolinux — have announced a partnership agreement and a joint lab. It will develop the base system, on the basis of which distributions of both software manufacturers will be created. The main goal of the alliance members is to strengthen their capabilities in the competitive struggle with the Ubuntu distribution, experts say.

Mandriva and Turbolinux have announced the creation of a joint lab Manbo-Labs. Developers plan to exchange resources and technologies in order to create a basic system, which will be released in April 2008 and can be used in the products of each of them. Manbo-Labs will include more than ten people from Japan, Brazil and France, as well as community programmers.

Mandriva is based in France and distributes its distributions mainly to European markets. Turbolinux is originally from Japan and, in turn, serves Asian users. “I very much hope that the Manbo-Labs project, launched by our two companies that have settled in Europe and Asia, will create a new trend in the development of Linux as we overcome the 10-year milestone in the history of the development of commercial Linux-systems” - noted Koichi Yano (Koichi Yano), general director of Turbolinux.

Recall that the combination of Mandriva and Turbolinux to create a basic system - this is the second attempt of Linux developers to resist the increasing competition in the open source market. In May 2002, Turbolinux, together with SUSE, Conectiva and the SCO Group (formerly Caldera Systems), tried to create a United Linux consortium. His main goal was the Red Hat standoff. “Then the initiative did not bring success,” recalls Alexey Novodvorsky, deputy general director of Alt Linux. “Unfortunately, the consortium did not last even two years, breaking up in January 2004, but we wish Mandriva and Turbolinux success in their new attempt.”

The current alliance, according to some observers, is designed to help Mandriva stay on the market under the pressure of Ubuntu. Created in 2004, the Ubuntu distribution was distributed from the very beginning free of charge to everyone and within a few years was able to become the undisputed leader in the desktop market for beginners. In 2005, Mandriva attempted to strengthen its position by purchasing the Brazilian developer Conectiva, however, according to experts, Ubuntu still continues to hold the lead.

In Mandriva and Turbolinux, it is hoped that pooling engineering resources will allow them to invest more in technology and product quality. For example, it will provide an opportunity to increase hardware compatibility and strengthen relationships with the Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) community and the Independent Hardware Vendors (IHVs) community.
