New Brief: Samsung launches first 3GB LPDDR3 memory modules in mass production

Good afternoon, Habr!

Samsung has put on stream the production of LPDDR3 memory modules for mobile devices, which have the largest volume (3 GB) among competitors in the market. This became known last week: the company once again was "ahead of the rest," in technical and technological terms. The first in the industry three-gigabyte samples of low-power mobile DRAM-memory of the third generation with doubled data transfer rate went to serial stamping. Until now, the most modern smartphones and tablets have been based on 2 GB modules ... well, it is time for another breakthrough and a change of standards.

The new mobile DRAM modules are based on six 4-gigabit LPDDR3 chips, created on 20-nm ones. process and collected together in a symmetrical structure of two sets of three chips each. The total thickness of the resulting "pack" is only 0.8 millimeters. The new ultra-thin memory will undoubtedly allow future mobile devices to continue to “lose weight”, freeing up more space, for example, for a battery, the resource of which is always not enough. The data transfer rate of the new memory in this case reaches 2133 Mbit / s per contact.

Increasing the power of mobile DRAM will allow you to fully deploy in such resource-intensive processes as watching high-definition video, multitasking, games and other media joy. In addition, such impressive data processing speeds of the new LPDDR3 modules inspire confidence that the advanced standards of mobile communications 4G and LTE-A will receive full support.

The new 3-gigabyte LPDDR3 DRAM is connected to the mobile application processor using two symmetrical data transmission channels, each of which is connected to a part of the 1.5 GB storage. The symmetric structure not only allows you to avoid performance losses that can be observed in asymmetric data streams, but also to maximize performance at the system level.

Considering that the capacity of DRAM-memory of an average home PC is 4 GB, such a serious breakthrough in the performance of a mobile RAM will significantly reduce the gap between the capabilities of a PC and mobile devices in the near future.

Thus, Samsung can now offer the widest range of DRAM-memory capacity from 1 to 3 GB. New memory chips will be used in the most modern smartphones in the second half of 2013. From 2014, they will be used in a wider list of mobile devices.
