Google is actively working to create a voice instant translator

It seems that after some time (perhaps a couple of years) we will get a mobile translator, allowing to translate ordinary speech from one language to another in real time. Recently, Google’s Android Vice President Hugo Barra revealed some of the details of the work.

In particular, he said that at the moment there are a very large number of prototypes, with which he works every week to verify the results achieved. Theoretically, such a translator will allow two people speaking different languages to understand each other without any problems and without the participation of a human translator. Similar devices were repeatedly demonstrated in various kinds of science fiction films and sf stories and novels.

According to Hugo Barr, the translator works almost perfectly in a “controlled environment” (one should understand, with minimal background sound) and some language pairs (for example, English-Portuguese). The accuracy of “understanding” by a translator of speech in other languages (as well as the accuracy of the translation itself) still leaves much to be desired.

I would like to hope that in a short time we will still get reliable translators who can turn the thoughts of science fiction writers into reality. Well, in all this, the positive thing is that the work on the project is very active, plus this work is not considered non-core for the company.
