About the book "Design of familiar things" heard almost everything; at least in the lists of books recommended by novice designers, it most often goes among the first. So, for everyone who wants to, this fall Udacity starts a free course on it. The author of the book, Don Norman, will lead the course together with his assistants. The course will be built on the basis of a new edition of the book, which will also appear on the shelves in the fall (we are talking about the original in English).

The material will be divided into three or four small courses, each of which can be taken separately. In general, the authors' goal is to help everyone to gain knowledge about the role of design in the modern world and learn how to apply it in practice. As in other courses, live video, specially selected exercises and consultations on the forum will be used - all in order to reveal the principles of interaction design, cognitive psychology and how emotions work. It is planned that all those who have completed the course will receive not only useful theoretical knowledge, but also a valuable ability to practice design.

For those who have not read the book itself, the summary to it:
Sometimes even an intelligent person feels like a fool, trying to figure out which button to press to turn on the light, how to light the oven, and what to do with the door — pull, push or push. The reason for this design, forgetting the needs of users and the basics of cognitive psychology, said the author of the book, Donald Norman, a man whom Business Week called "one of the most influential designers in the world."

Norman considers common user mistakes and offers designers various ways to prevent such mistakes. He explains the basic requirements of users and introduces the reader to the classic mistakes of designers.
