New Brief: Samsung Announced New Exynos 5 Octa Processor - Exynos 5420

Good afternoon, Habr!

The other day, Samsung Electronics introduced the addition to the Exynos product family, equipped with the industry's first six-core ARM Mali-T628 GPU graphics processor. Samsung's latest eight-core processor is a powerful, energy-efficient tool for integrating the multi-faceted user interface capabilities directly into the system architecture. Officially, the Exynos 5420 will be presented at SIGGRAPH 2013.

The processor features a new ARM Mali-T628 MP6 GPU, which, compared to its predecessor, doubles the processing capabilities of graphic data. The novelty is able to perform general-purpose computations on the graphics processor (GPGPU), thereby significantly speeding up the computation / operations algorithms that were previously processed by the CPU. The processor also supports OpenGL ES 3.0 and Open CL 1.1 Full Profile, which provide the power needed for multi-layer processing of high-end integrated game scenarios, post-processing and photo and video sharing, as well as general high-performance and multi-tasking operations.

The Exynos 5420 is charged with four 1.8 GHz ARM Cortex-A15 cores and four 1.3 GHz additional Cortex-A7 cores and is based on the ARM big.LITTLE architecture. The power of the CPU has increased by 20% compared with its predecessor due to the optimization of energy-saving algorithms.

In addition, a new embedded solution for compressing IP MIC images inside this system-on-chip successfully reduces overall power consumption during multimedia processing. This feature allows you to increase the time of continuous operation of mobile devices equipped with high-resolution displays, in particular, when working on the Internet or with multimedia applications that require frequent screen updates.

The new processor Exynos 5 Octa supports dual-channel LPDDR3 memory with a clock frequency of 933 MHz. Its capacity is 14.9 Gbit / s. In addition, the new product is capable of processing Full HD video at 60 frames per second.

Currently, individual samples of Samsung Exynos 5420 are presented to future customers, and in mass production the new processor will go away in August of this year.

PS: a reputable IT portal Engadget posted yesterday a video on which a prototype tablet from Samsung based on the Exynos 5420 processor competes in speed with the Nexus 10. The result, so to speak, is obvious.
