Which domain zones are safer?

The company Architelos, which provides consulting and management services in the domain industry, recently published the results of a study of the security of domain zones. 72 domain zones and more than 257 million second-level domains, ie more than 99% of all registered names. To identify potential threats, NameSentry technology developed by the company was used.

According to its results, it was concluded that cybercriminals are attracted to domain zones with a low registration cost, as well as those zones in which registrars are inactive and have little control over the observance of the rules. Whereas in areas with a high cost of registration and strict rules of sites with malicious content is much less. But, despite the evidence of this conclusion, some of the results of the study were quite unexpected.

Among all registered domains, 0.4% are dangerous (about 4000 per million).

90% of dangerous domains spread spam, 6% contained viruses or other malicious software. Over the year, 150,000 unique domains registered for phishing were recorded. The domains that make up the botnets turned out to be relatively small, but their potential danger is very high.

Security level of 15 domain zones (21%) Architelos rated as excellent. Among them - only two domains of general use: .tel and .xxx. Among the national zones, the safest are .no domains (Norway), .nz (New Zealand), .ch (Switzerland), .cz (Czech Republic), .au (Australia).

A good level of security - in 36 (50%) domain zones. Among them - the two largest national domain .de (Germany) and, oddly enough, .tk (Tokelau). And this is despite the fact that the .tk zone, in which you can get a domain for free, has long been in disrepute, not least because of sites with malicious content.

Satisfactory level of security - in 13 domain zones. This category includes the largest common domains - .com, .net and .org, as well as the national domains .uk (United Kingdom), .at (Austria), .su (former USSR) and .eu (European Union).

The worst security level is in 7 top-level domains. Unfortunately, the Russian .ru domain, along with the .cn (China) and .us (US) zones and the public domain .info, has also fallen into their number.
