Interface designer from sci-fi films can learn a lot of interesting and useful things. Over the years, computer systems in films reflected ideas and stereotypes about the design of the future, often ahead of the appearance of prototypes of similar devices.
Story
Movies 30 years old are hard to be taken seriously today, because most of the systems of the future looked at best ( Alien, 1979 ):
')
You can understand how the computers of the future imagined 40 years ago: a lot of light bulbs, buttons and not a hint of touch control. A few more shots from the same movie:
Another 1979 film, “ Star Trek: The Motion Picture ” (first full-length film) reflects the same ideas:
" Doctor Who ", 1984:
Much the same was in the 1968 Stanley Kubrick film " Space Odyssey 2001 ", the button-light bulb:
The computer industry grew rapidly, and soon interfaces appeared in the cinema, which can be viewed without tears today. For example, the touch interface in the movie " Star Trek: The Next Generation ", 1987:
The next stage of the interfaces in the cinema came with the appearance of the film " Minority Report " with Tom Cruise in 2002. The protagonist with the help of special gloves easily managed with a 3D-interface:
The Kinect game controller for the Xbox 360 was first introduced in 2009.
In modern films we see a large number of variations on the theme of the interfaces of the future, but most come down to large 3D or touch devices, spectacular blue-green schemes and texts on a black background and a characteristic click (chick-chik or pi). Examples from the movie " Prometheus " 2012:
Of course, any person who is not too far from design will notice that even in the most high-budget blockbusters, the creators pay too little attention to the design of interfaces and especially the plausibility of data on the screens of computers and other devices. But it should be noted that, like in any works of art in the fiction genre (in particular, books), in the movies, the authors often outpace progress, predicting the emergence of new technologies.
