Finnish startup Uniqul opens a payment system based on face recognition
The quality of facial recognition systems has finally reached a level where you can do without any additional personal identifiers at all, the founders of Uniqul are sure. With the help of their payment system, it will be possible to pay for the purchased product or service, simply going to the terminal and pressing the “OK” button after the system recognizes you by sight. The whole payment process takes less than 5 seconds. The first Uniqul terminals are due to arrive soon in Helsinki. According to representatives of Uniqul, their recognition system confidently distinguishes even identical twins.
Over the past decade, the efficiency of facial recognition algorithms has increased almost a hundred times . Recognition systems are already used in some major airports in the world to check documents, and, according to border guards, violators with fake passports have recently increasingly chosen to be checked where they are monitored by a living person - the chances of successfully crossing the border are higher in this case.
To improve the quality and speed of recognition, the creators of Uniqul used a little trick - there are several tariff plans in the system, the price of which depends on the size of the territory where the terminals will recognize faces. Within a radius of 1-2 kilometers from a given point, the fare is 1 euro per month; It costs 2 euros to talk in the whole city, and 3 euros for the city and region. Using Uniqul worldwide will cost 7 euros per month. Thus, the number of people in the database, the coincidence with which you need to check, almost always remains small - people who use the system locally can be arbitrarily similar in different cities and countries, and this will not confuse the system. In the case of a false-negative recognition result, each user has a pin code that can be entered into the terminal if the person is detected uncertainly. ')
