Microsoft is building its own content delivery network (CDN) based on technologies recently licensed from the well-known CDN provider Limelight Networks. Creating your own CDN Internet infrastructure is necessary to transfer Microsoft software to a web platform, as well as to better serve the audience of users of the largest IT corporation in the world. Microsoft's online audience includes more than 460 million people from 234 countries (including several dozen from Antarctica).
Creating a global CDN-network Microsoft, which will cover the entire Internet, is already in full swing. This was announced by Debra Chrapaty (Debra Chrapaty), vice president of Global Foundation Services at Microsoft and one of the leaders of this direction. This girl is an experienced economist, computer scientist and Internet entrepreneur, she took part in the creation and promotion of such popular projects as E * Trade, AllBusiness.com and NBA.com.
The project started back in August last year, when Microsoft and Limelight announced cross-licensing of their technologies and “cooperation to expand and improve the corresponding infrastructures”. The fact that Microsoft did not want to simply use the services of a CDN-provider, and agreed with him about the licensing of technology, even then suggested that the Redmond giant is promoting a homegrown project.
Rumor has it that not only Microsoft begins to develop its own network infrastructure. The other day, Akamai’s leader’s shares declined significantly when it appeared that Apple, one of Akamai’s main customers for nine years,
could go to Google’s server , as Google increasingly claims to be a global CDN provider and can officially start providing such services.
