Microsoft: special services make us justify to users

In connection with the latest information on the PRISM project, tracking users and mass media information about Microsoft's “total listening”, they decided to give an explanation of this situation , as well as publish in open access a letter that they sent to the US Attorney General. The content of the letter clearly hints that the security services do not want to clearly explain their position on the account of information made public by Snowden, which in turn casts a big shadow on the company and all its services, including the SkyDrive cloud, the Outlook mail service and the Skype messenger. In particular, the letter says [PDF]:

We have received official documents on the world’s law. This request was rejected. We understand that various government agencies are trying to reach a decision on these issues. It is a scandal.

Last week we asked for. permission to publish information about the practices used, which are described in published documents, and have now been misinterpreted in the media around the world. This request was rejected. Although we understand that various government agencies are trying to make decisions on these issues, we have received this answer for several weeks. Meanwhile, the practical result of such indecision does not allow us to share more detailed information with the public.

The main theses of MS.
')
Outlook.com (formerly Hotmail)

The company does not provide direct access to mail and messages to government organizations. Like other service providers, a company sometimes fulfills government requirements for providing content for certain accounts, in accordance with a search warrant or a court order. The company does not provide technical direct access to user content, information about encryption keys https.

Skydrive

The company does not provide government organizations with direct access to the data of SkyDrive users, as well as other providers, it does so only by order or court decision, as is the case with Outlook. In 2013, we made some changes to the rules of operation of our service in order to fulfill more legal requirements put forward by governments around the world. None of these changes has provided anyone with direct technical access to SkyDrive data.

Skype

As in the first two cases, only if there is a special order, we disclose information about user accounts. In 2012, we introduced a number of new technologies to Skype, which were not aimed at giving the government access to the content of calls.
