Hello! By the numerous requests of our users and readers, we post statistics on the use of databases, application servers, as well as
Java and PHP versions
in the Jelastic cloud . The data was collected in a fairly simple way: we simply calculated the number of our users who used a particular software stack when creating environments on the Jelastic platform for the past month (all test accounts, of course, were excluded). Also in this article, you can track trends over the past year for databases and everything related to Java, and over the past 5 months for application servers and PHP versions (since PHP support was implemented at the end of January of this year).
Database
As you can see, the winner among the databases is quite predictable - this is MySQL (65%). With a large margin, MySQL's sister, MariaDB, takes second place, which is used by 12% of our users. The top three are closed by Postgres and Mongo - by 11% each. Well, and the outsider, our competition - CouchDB, which scored only one percent.

')
Let's look at the situation in the regions.

Current numbers:

There are some differences in the preferences of developers from different countries, take, for example, Finland or Sweden. In Russia, the results are very close to general statistics.
In the following graph, you can track trends over the past year.

In principle, everything is pretty smooth, there are only small jumps in the popularity of MySQL.
Java application north
Tomcat 7 leads among Java servers with a very significant gap from the rest - it has as much as 73%. It is followed by its predecessor Tomcat 6, at which 12%. Next come GlassFish and Jetty, in which 10% and 4%, respectively. TomEE is behind all this month (1%), but still may change in the near future, as this is new to our platform.

Do not judge strictly for comparing servlet containers with JavaEE servers.
In the regions, the numbers were distributed as follows:

There are already more distinguished from the general picture of Finland, Japan and Switzerland.
Summary table:

Let's see what has changed over the past year.

It's not hard to see that the more recent version of Tomcat has strengthened its position and is now the undisputed leader.
Php application server
We still have two contenders in this category: Apache and Nginx. The undisputed number one is Apache, which is preferred by 79% of our users.

Interestingly, in Russia, 50 to 50: we support domestic producers :)

Since the addition of PHP support, the popularity of Apache has rapidly increased.

Java 6 vs Java 7
Java 7 continues to “advance”: compared with the previous month, its popularity has increased by another 16%.

If you analyze the distribution by region, it is easy to see that the popularity of Java 7 has increased almost everywhere.

Current figures are:

What has changed during the year?

PHP versions
As you can see, PHP developers, like Java developers, prefer to use a newer version of PHP: 87% vs. 13%.

Regional statistics show that in almost all countries where Jelastic is represented, the developers agreed.

As you can see, the popularity of PHP 5.4 has also increased dramatically over the past month.
Note: The results in this article are not an accurate representation of the distribution in the global market. This is the distribution statistics inside the Jelastic platform .Well, that's all for today. Stay tuned for the popularity of software stacks in our next articles.
