BitTorrent is 12 years old

Yes, and BitTorrent is 12 years old on July 2. It can be said that 12 years have passed since the moment when there was a jump in the development of the Web, thanks to the advent of this peer-to-peer data exchange protocol. and the corresponding application. On July 2, 2001, a message from Bram Cohen appeared on the Yahoo bulletin board. The message was short: “ My new app, BitTorrent, is now in working order, check it out here .” One cannot say that joyful comments like “hurray, finally the Internet will change.”

As in many similar cases, users appreciated the capabilities of the application a long time later. And so, one of the comments on Cohen's post read “What is BitTorrent, Bram?”. After some time, the protocol and the application have already "come out in people", and became popular. One of the first virtual places where BitTorrent features were tested was the Etree music community. Following the community, many other resources began to use BitTorrent (including The Pirate Bay).

At first, BitTorrent was perceived as a way to share content protected by copyright with impunity, but then they all started using it for legal purposes. The same musicians realized that the distribution of their content among web users, albeit free of charge, could make the performer / group popular, and very much so. And not only musicians. Companies like Facebook and Twitter also began to use BitTorrent for their own purposes.

Now, it can be said without exaggeration, billions of Web users work with BitTorrent every month, and there are no signs that the popularity of technology is declining.

Well, it remains only to congratulate BitTorrent on the next birthday!
