
Today in St. Petersburg, the winners of the 37th Student World Championships on Programming of the Computer Engineering Association (
ACM ICPC ) were announced, the global sponsor of which is
IBM . They were three students of the St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (
SPNUU ITMO ). Known as the “Battle of Brains”, the finale of a prestigious international competition brought together 120 teams that competed for the title of the most resourceful programming specialists.

The championship was hosted by the St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (SPNUU ITMO), whose
team won the 2012 final in Warsaw. Competition participants were required to show in-depth knowledge of key trends and the possibilities of applying analytical technologies to the processing of Big Data - one of the key driving forces of the modern economy and career opportunities in the IT field.

The ITMO team solved 10 of 11 tasks in five hours, demonstrating an exceptional level of professional skills and the ability to quickly solve complex problems. Programming champions will return home with the award and honorary title of the most resourceful programming specialists among students from all over the world, as well as with prizes and scholarships from IBM and a guaranteed job offer or internship at a corporation.

”In addition to participating in the championship, participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with the latest developments of the IBM Research & Development Labs and talk with leading international experts in the field of information technology, and also took part in excursions to such sights of St. Petersburg as the Hermitage and the Peter and Paul Fortress.

120 teams took part in the ACM ICPC final, which won regional tournaments last fall. Initially, the selection was carried out among 300,000 students of information technology faculties. A record number of finalists reached the regional level: 29,479 participants from 2322 universities in 91 countries competed in 300 different venues on 6 continents in order to receive one of 120 invitations to the championship final in St. Petersburg.
