We have two good news.
First, 2GIS for Android has been downloaded from Google Play more than 4 million times already. Thank!
Secondly, an update with hardware accelerated graphics (OpenGL) is coming soon. It is designed to add to our application even more smoothness. And get rid of unnecessary brakes, which is.
')
Before the release, of course, need testing. Inner we have already held. Now we need your help. If you have a device on Android 2.2 or a newer version, then please participate in the testing.
Why do we need it?
Whatever the army of various Android devices, we would not have, to collect them all still will not work. And I want to test hardware acceleration on as many models as possible. That is why we call you to help, and at the same time give the opportunity to try the new product before the others.
What is in the update?
First of all, the above-mentioned hardware graphics acceleration (OpenGL). The biggest difference should be felt by the owners of powerful devices with cool video accelerators and HD screens. They work with 2GIS will definitely become smooth
and silky . But this does not mean that the devices are weaker left behind. Even on those devices where OpenGL will not work, they promise improvements in the interface, thanks to the optimization performed.
Possible problems and features- For older devices, for example: with a resolution of less than 640x480, without OpenGL ES 2.0 support, with Adreno 200/203/205 GPU, GC800, Broadcom VideoCore IV, as well as “PowerVR SGX 530/531 + old firmware”, acceleration is not supported. The main reason is that our 3D engine in software mode works much better and faster than OpenGL on these video chips.
- On some devices with Adreno 200/203/205 (for example, HTC Desire 2010-2011 series with Cyanogen firmware, Sony Xperia) hardware acceleration does not work correctly (and we do not support this series of graphics accelerators), but the program does not block them automatically. In this case, simply disable the Hardware acceleration in the general settings of the application and restart it. And also send us an email through “Settings -> About program” with the message that hardware acceleration was not blocked automatically.
How to participate in testing?
Join a special group on Google+ . Do not be surprised: this is the officially proposed method of recording Google for testing applications from Google Play. We ourselves try it for the first time, so it will be very interesting to look at the result.
After joining the community, you need
to follow the link and click there a button that speaks for itself (guess which one).
If everything was done correctly, you will soon be able to upgrade 2GIS to version 2.9.3. This is our beta.
What to do if suddenly hardware acceleration does not bring joy, but only spoils life with artifacts or brakes? Sadly, but most likely, your device is not compatible with it and you need to turn it off. This can be done in the application settings. And after that, it is highly desirable to send us feedback.
And how can I actually send feedback?
- Write a letter to mobile_beta@2gis.ru . In the letter to describe the problem and, of course, do not forget to specify the device model and firmware version.
- You can also send an email from the application itself, using the button in the “About” section. In this case, information about your device will be automatically attached.

- If there are no problems, feedback is still welcome! For example, here, in the comments to the post. We will be happy if you indicate that you are fine, and what device you use.
PS Owners of current flagships with FullHD-displays sometimes note that the fonts in the application are too small. This, of course, will be corrected, but by the release (in beta, so far everything is still).
