Runet in pictures. New release

Hi, Habr! Today we want to present a new edition of our infographic series Runet in Pictures. This time we decided to consider the market of bank cards in the world and in Russia. Based on the collected data, we estimated what cards Russians use and how actively, how popular various MPSs are and what trends are noticeable today on the Russian plastic market.

When collecting information, we used data provided by the Central Bank of Russia, international payment systems VISA and MasterCard.

So, what conclusions can be drawn from the above data?

1) We are still significantly lagging behind Europe and America in terms of the number of bank cards per 1 inhabitant of the country (on average, there are 2 bank cards per 1 Russian). However, the growth rates of the number of bank cards are encouraging and demonstrate that the Russian plastic market has a good potential in store.

2) In Russia, an absolute majority consists of debit cards (although an overdraft is open to some of them). Only 7.5% of credit cards meanwhile, which indicates a weak development of the credit market and the absence of Russian habits and a desire to use credit products and “live on credit”. Our citizens prefer to accumulate savings by the old memory or to live on the basis of the funds currently available.

3) And, of course, a little about which payment systems rule the ball. The global plastic market was divided between VISA and MasterCard MPS. They are present in almost all countries of all continents, and most of the operations are carried out using the cards of these payment systems. And although China UnionPay is the leader in the number of cards issued, its presence is rather local - for the most part it is the Asian region.

PS We are happy to accept comments, comments, suggestions and ideas on the subject of the next issues of “Runet in Pictures”. What do you find interesting about the e-commerce market in Russia and about the RuNet in general?
