The city council of Munich plans to distribute disks with the Lubuntu distribution as a “replacement for Windows XP”, the 11-year-old Microsoft operating system, which officially ends in April next year, to residents of the city, OMG website reports ! Ubuntu! .

The goal of the effort is to prevent “e-waste” from discarded computers that will not meet the requirements of Windows 7 or Windows 8, but will be able to work on an alternative operating system. It is estimated that about 20 million German users still work on Windows XP.

At the suggestion of the city council, which has already been tentatively accepted, 2000 discs with Lubuntu will be distributed at special events early next year. At these events, Windows XP users will be told about options for action after the end of OS support and will offer a “tested and reliable” free Linux solution for those who do not want to buy a new computer.

The choice fell on Lubuntu firstly because the officials considered that the interface of this distribution is quite similar to Windows XP and would not require special skills from new users. Secondly, Lubuntu's system requirements are much lower than other distributions, including Ubuntu: Lubuntu can fully run on just 256 MB of RAM.

The city council of Munich is known for the fact that in 2003 it decided to transfer more than 13 thousand workstations computers with Windows XP to its own distribution kit Limux. It is alleged that thanks to this the city was able to save 10 million euros.
