MySQL documentation is removed from the GPL license (a bug in the build system)

MariaDB developers accidentally noticed that in the project from MySQL 5.5.30 to MySQL 5.5.31, the project changed the license text in all files in the man / directory.

Instead of the previous short text “This documentation is free software, you can distribute and / or change it only under the terms of the GNU General Public License, as published by the Free Software Foundation; version 2 of the license "is now a long description , starting with the words:" This software and related documentation is distributed under a license agreement that contains restrictions on use and disclosure and is protected by intellectual property laws. "

“Except as expressly provided for in the license agreement or permitted by law, it is prohibited to use, copy, reproduce, translate, broadcast, modify, license, transmit, distribute, perform, publish or display in part, in any form, or by any means, - said in the new documentation. “Reengineering, disassembling and decompiling software, if not legally required for compatibility, is prohibited.”

Next comes a long description of the terms of use of the software when delivered to the US government or to another party under license on behalf of the US government.

')

Just below is further explained to those who still do not understand: "This documentation is NOT distributed under the GPL license." You can print the documentation only for personal needs. Distribution is prohibited in any form.

The screenshot shows how long the license text has become.

In general, it all looks very strange, although one of the major MySQL developers, Michael (Monty) Widenius, warned three more years ago: “There are many other ways that Oracle can make it almost impossible for the fork to survive. When all the adequate forks die, Oracle will be able to quietly kill MySQL ... It will take a long time, but in the end they can do it. "

By the way, lately, several large web projects have gone at once from MySQL to MariaDB fork, including Wikipedia . Replacing MySQL with MariaDB is planned in the Fedora 19 distribution, which is scheduled for release on July 2, as well as in openSUSE and RHEL 7 .

UPD. A message in the MySQL bug tracker indicates that the wrong license text was added to the man / files because of a bug in the build system.
