Chinese supercomputer Tianhe-2 tops the world ranking Top500

The Tianhe-2 supercomputer, built by the Defense Science and Technology University of the People’s Liberation Army of China, turned out to be the fastest in the world. His performance was 33.86 petaflops on Linpack test, which allowed him to take the first line in the ranking of the 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world. The performance of the previous leader of the rating, Cray Titan, is almost half as much - 17.59 petaflops.

Tianhe-2 is based on Intel Xeon processors. The computer consists of 16,000 nodes, each of which contains two Xeon IvyBridge processors and three Xeon Phi processors. He has 3,120,000 cores and 1.4 petabytes of RAM. Supercomputer running Kylin Linux. The communication between the nodes is carried out using a specially developed proprietary network TH Express-2, the heart of which are thirteen 576-port switches based on ASIC chips made on 90nm technology, each of which has a throughput of 2.56 terabits per second.

File storage has a capacity of 12.4 petabytes. Power consumption - 17.8 megawatts (24 megawatts, including cooling and air conditioning systems). The computer covers an area of 720 m 2 . The most detailed description of the Tianhe-2 supercomputer is in the report ( PDF ) of Jack Dongarr from Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
