IPv6 - one year later

June 6, 2012, the launch of IPv6 - the new version of IP protocol, which replaced the IPv4. Due to the rapid growth in the number of smartphones, tablets and other devices with the ability to connect to the Internet, there is a risk that the stock of available IP addresses will soon run out. IPv6 solves this problem, as well as some other security flaws.

Unfortunately, IPv4 and IPv6 are incompatible, so it became necessary to gradually transfer the Internet from one protocol version to another. There are different transition methods . The most common solution is to assign both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses until most of the Internet goes to IPv6.

Most operating systems, devices and Internet providers already support IPv6, but among users this technology is spreading very slowly.

As we found out, most sites will not be able to function in a “clean” Ipv6 space: even if they support Ipv6, the new version of the protocol is not supported by their DNS servers. Below are the data for the 25 most visited sites in Russia (according to Alexa data):

In general, the percentage of DNS servers using IPv6 is extremely small, and it does not exceed one percent in any domain zone.

It remains to be hoped that the pace of IPv6 technology acceleration will accelerate to the time when, due to the lack of IPv4 addresses, users will have difficulty accessing network resources.
