WiSee project: we recognize the gestures of a person in the next room using only Wi-Fi
A rather interesting system was developed by specialists from the University of Washington. The development team has created a prototype system that uses a Wi-Fi signal to identify a person’s gesture. The project received the logical name "WiSee". All this can be used, for example, at home - to turn off the light in the next room, or to change the volume of the player. All that is needed from the user is to make a certain gesture, understandable by the WiSee.
Theoretically, such a system could be the ideal control center for a smart home. Turning off the lights in the whole house, turning on the TV on the top floor - all this becomes possible with the WiSee. ')
For gesture recognition, a change in the signal level of a wireless network is monitored, not only, for example, of a router, but also of a laptop, smartphone, and other gadgets connected to a Wi-Fi network.
According to the developers, the system is based on Doppler shift. Small changes in wireless signal caused by human movement are captured by the WiSee, analyzed, and translated into understandable for controlled devices signals. The prototype proved to be effective in 94% of checks. Those. 94% of developer gestures embedded in the system were recognized correctly. Testing was carried out in an apartment with two rooms.
The developers claim that WiSee is the first gesture recognition system that does not require any cameras or any additional devices. Design equipment picks up signals from a normal home network, and works with these signals.
At the same time WiSee can work simultaneously with 5 people, and not just with one user. The activation of the receiver, WiSee, is carried out by a special gesture known only to the user. This allows you to protect the system from outside interference.
