Found mutations of the genome responsible for the level of education

Last week in Science : an international team of researchers reported finding genetic variations associated with the amount of education received by people with European roots.

Scientists conducted a genome-wide association study and found mutations in specific regions of the genome, the appearance of which correlates with educational achievements. The found mutations are responsible for only two percent of the variations in the level of education and cognitive abilities, but include "promising" single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for further research. In particular, three independent mutations (rs9320913, rs11584700, rs4851266) are responsible for approximately 1 additional month of study each.

The study was conducted on data on the inhabitants of the state of Utah with North and West European roots (HapMap 2 CEU).
