How to create technology for a startup

Wrote another article in LJ. Here is an excerpt.

In order to create technology that will be in demand in global markets, you need to know these global markets. Understanding global technological (in the light of technology in which the engineer is competent) markets implies the following knowledge from an engineer:
- knowledge of all applications of technology - knowledge of all industries, products and processes where the technology can be applied.
- knowledge of all independent and dependent laboratories and companies that are developing in this area
- knowledge of all the "luminaries" who are developing,
- knowledge of recent achievements
- know about the volume of markets (sales in units or money) of products that are manufactured using this technology. At this point I want to stay in more detail. The scientist does not need to go into market research. It is enough for him to know the orders of numbers (sales amount to hundreds of millions (hundreds of thousands of units) of dollars a year). This is very important because all estimates of the value of a future startup are carried out through assessments of the markets and the money that can be earned in this market.
