Almost nine years ago — August 20, 2004 — Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of the Ubuntu project, registered the notorious
bug number 1 (release) in the internal bug tracker: “Microsoft has the largest market share today.” The description of the bug says that there is no competition in the market and Open Source is poorly represented.
Today, on May 30, 2013, Mark Shuttleworth himself announced a
bug fix : “Personal computer devices today have a broader definition than in 2004: phones, tablets, wearable devices and other gadgets are part of our digital life. From the point of view of competition, the wider the market is, the healthier the competition is, and iOS and Android represent a significant part here, ”he writes.
In his comments, Mark Shattworth refers to a chart from the latest Mary Meeker
2013 report on
Internet Trends , published yesterday. The graph shows the change in popularity of different computer platforms in the years 1975-2012.

“Android may not be the best version of Linux for me or you, but it’s no doubt a free platform that provides both practical and economic benefits for users and the entire personal computing industry,” writes Mark Shuttleworth. “So we have both competition and a good representation of Open Source.”
For many years the presence of this bug had a social meaning. Having a goal that had to be achieved lent strength to move forward. Now the goal is reached.
“Although we [Ubuntu] ourselves played a minor role in these changes, it is important for us to recognize that they occurred. So from the point of view of Ubuntu, the bug is closed, ”Shuttleworth admits.
