The cost of upgrading the satellite system has increased 2.5 times

The latest news: the cost of upgrading the ground control system of navigation satellites has increased from $ 1.4 billion (it is this amount that the Accounting Chamber counted) to 3.4 billion. The representative of the Ministry of Defense said that this amount is “base”, and can be adjusted as work progresses.

Problems with the functioning of the ground part of the global navigation system arose almost immediately after its launch, and more than a billion dollars have already been spent on its “modernization”. In fact, we are talking about redesigning the current system from scratch - in February 2010, a private company won the tender for the design of a new system in the amount of $ 888.4 million.

Reportedly, most of this money will be spent on software development, and not on hardware at all. Initially, it was assumed that third-generation satellites will start launching in April 2014, but now only software will be ready for them no earlier than October 2016.

In general, the further development of the GPS system is a big question, and, at least, is delayed by two years.
