Avatars have overtaken blacks on energy consumption

The resettlement of earthlings in the virtual world will not solve the environmental problems of our planet. If you count , it turns out that avatars suck the resources of the Earth no less than the ordinary inhabitants of modern civilization.

It is known that in the data centers of the virtual universe Second Life there are about 4,000 servers, while at any time there are from 10 thousand to 15 thousand active avatars. To calculate the total power consumption for avatars, you need to take into account not only the number of servers (200 watts, on average, plus 50 watts for cooling the data center), but also the consumption of home PCs (on average, 120 watts). The daily energy consumption of the SL universe is calculated using this formula.

(4,000 x 250 x 24) + (12,500 x 120 x 24) = 60 thousand kWh, or 4.8 kWh per avatar.

Each year avatars consume 1752 kWh. For comparison, the average inhabitant of the Earth consumes 2436 kWh per year, including in developed countries - 7702 kWh, in Russia —5480 kWh, Belarus - 3,039 kWh, Ukraine - 2998 kWh ( statistics for 2003). But in poor developing countries, energy consumption is only 1015 kWh per person per year. The worst have to blacks in Africa. For example, residents of Mozambique spend only 365 kWh per year, and residents of Nigeria - 106 kWh. That is, one SL avatar consumes as many resources as 16 Nigerians.

Since we get the main share of energy by burning hydrocarbons, the energy consumption of avatars can be translated into carbon dioxide emissions. It turns out that each virtual resident ejects 1.17 tons of CO 2 per year.
