GLONASS is not quite dead

GLONASS (GLOBAL Navigation Satellite System) - Russian satellite navigation system, analogue of GPS , launched 3 spacecraft into orbit yesterday. Now the system has 16 satellites, which covers navigation in Russia up to 90%, and all over the Earth up to 80%. ... for complete happiness you need 24 satellites.

I used to think that I was completely dead. If you remember, in 2007 Putin wanted to buy a GLONASS receiver for the Labrador Cony . Looks like he will buy it.

Actually, the project is slightly classified by the military, as I understand it, and not a lot of information is leaked to the press. These are mostly funny things: the appearance of the “brick” is rather poor; the accuracy of Russian space navigation is 10 meters, the American one is 1 meter; on the ground, buildings, hillocks, ravine slopes, etc .; it seems that only aviation will use it; for the curious, this is what the GLONASS maps look like; there is no program for the development of GLONASS ground components; the cost of civilian navigators is $ 500- $ 800; they say that they will be sold in “White Wind”, “M.Video”, “Eldorado” and other stores.

By the way, for some reason, GLONASS needs 24 satellites for complete happiness, the Chinese with their COMPASS and Europe with Galileo to 30.
