Ten most interesting inventions of 2007

New Scientist magazine summed up the results of 2007 and identified the ten most significant inventions. The hit parade was compiled by the number of clicks on the New Scientist website, where information about each patent was published. In other words, this is a reader's choice, and not the opinion of scientists and specialists. But still it is rather curious to see what most attracted the attention of the public.

10. Skateboard patterned sigvei
Sony announced plans to create a skateboard on gyroscopes with motors that will work just like a Segway, that is, tilting in any direction drives the motors, and the device is rolling in that direction. The idea of such a device in itself demonstrates how limitless human laziness is. After all, a skateboard without any engines works on the same principle.

9. Fingerprints of living fingers
Another Sony invention can save the health, and even the life of a person who is faced with fingerprint authentication systems. Standard fingerprint scanners simply photograph a finger and compare the pattern of papillary patterns on the skin with a sample in the database. Thus, it is enough for an intruder to get someone else’s finger - and he can pass with him through any scanner. Sony's invention works more subtly: it scans a three-dimensional picture of the blood vessels under the skin. A unique picture for each person is visible in infrared radiation and, importantly, only on a living finger.

8. Fabric displays
Philips plans to manufacture woven fabrics with woven polymer threads. In appearance and touch, it will not differ from ordinary fabric, but it will also be able to fluoresce, that is, to glow in any color. They say that this invention can be used by the military for sewing camouflage clothing capable of accepting any kind of color.

7. Wheels with wings
In the near future, the wheels of airplanes may acquire a special aerodynamic profile, which immediately before landing will cause the wheels to rotate in order to reduce tire wear and increase safety. Some people say that this patent cannot be issued, because NASA developed a similar technology in the 70s, and one reader saw something like this in Popular Mechanics magazine during the Second World War. Let's see what the US Patent Office says.

6. Hemostatic dressings
The material, consisting of 65% fiber and 35% bamboo fiber, not only absorbs blood, like normal gauze, but also quickly stops bleeding by stimulating the body's production of proteins that regulate blood clotting: thrombin and fibrinogen.

5. Diet through hibernation
Is it possible to switch the metabolism of the human body from the state of carbohydrate burning to fat burning mode, as it happens in bears and other mammals during hibernation? Scientists have been able to successfully carry out such an experiment on mice and cause them to change metabolism, although rodents never hibernate in nature. But apparently, this mode is hidden deep in the genes of all mammals, including humans.

4. Vibrating blade 2.0
Philips shaver maker assures that if the razor blades move forward and back above the skin and not up and down, this will reduce irritation. Philips engineers want to implement such a mechanism using a piezoelectric element.

3. Radiator for the brain
In epileptics in overexcited areas of the brain, the cells heat up so much that they cause serious overheating of the surrounding areas. This can cause severe seizures. Japanese experts have come up with an original radiator, which is implanted in a dangerous area of the brain and cools it with a heat sink, which leads to a plate attached to the outside of the skull. The brain is cooled simply by ambient air.

2. Wide gigapixel surveillance camera
A wide-angle digital camera is capable of shooting from a height of 7.5 km an area of 10 km 2 with a resolution of less than 50 cm per pixel. In principle, one such camera is enough to ensure surveillance of an entire city, shooting at 4 frames / s.

1. Microsoft's mind reading system
The first place of the charts could be predicted. Of course, we are most afraid that Microsoft will penetrate into our brains and read our thoughts. This is the patent patented by this company. Electroencephalogram of the user's brain is recorded in the process of its work with the computer interface, so that the mole operating system instantly reacts to brain impulses. The device is called Microsoft Mind Reader.
