FlexPod: Cloupia Unified Infrastructure Controller (CUIC) - New Acquisition of Cisco

Somehow imperceptibly in the vastness of IT, news of the purchase by Cisco of the Cloupia company for $ 125 million passed. Cisco saw the addition of its portfolio of solutions for data centers providing cloud services with software from Cloupia. I also recall that Cloupia is the first orchestrator validated by both Cisco and NetApp to manage FlexPod architecture. What is FlexPod , can be found in the relevant article on Habré. For greater clarity, there will be many pictures.

CUIC

CUIC is a data center infrastructure orchestrator, capable of combining both physical equipment in a data center and virtualized environments. With it, you can orchestrate from the "one point" of the entrance. Thus, this tool is capable of providing services like: IaaS and PaaS .
Examples of such equipment:

CUIC features

The possibility of "management from one place" is not all that this orchestrator can do.
Cloupia allows you to integrate into a sequence of any atomic operations, in terms of Cloupia, called "workflow". By transferring such a workflow to the user, he will be able to query the data center resources available in the pool and receive them at his disposal in a few mouse clicks in minutes. In the basic configuration, a large number of already prepared typical workflows are supplied.
You can control not only virtual environments, but also bare metal, such as switches, storage systems , servers, etc.
Another useful feature is also included monitoring of consumed resources. Here you can get detailed reports on various types of objects, such as: users using cloud provider resources (in the broad sense of the word), groups of these users, entire organizations (including user groups), storage space consumed, CPU and memory usage, network counting traffic and more.
Graph display can be flexibly configured and available in the sections on: network part, computing resources, data storage system, virtualized environments, financial expenses (up to power consumption), etc.
Well, as it became clear from the previous paragraph - in Cloupia CUIC there is a self-service portal that allows you to get statistics on the resources consumed by the user with the display on all possible sections.
In the same place, on a self-service portal, the load generated by all entities, both physical and virtual, is displayed.

In one of the tabs of the portal is available a list of possible "to order" workflow.
The process of the application can be seen as the user who ordered the service, and from the admin panel, the administrator of the orchestrator.

FlexPod

Since CUIC is the very first validated orchestrator for the FlexPod, it provides convenient tools for managing this architecture. So, during commissioning, it is very convenient to use the “plump” of the FlexPod infrastructure, which contains all the components of the architecture, for which it remains only to add the management IP address, login and password. In the future, the overall status of the entire FlexPod can be observed from one place - on the dedicated tab of the admin interface. Choosing an architecture component will take you to a detailed view of its state, from where it is also possible to configure it.

CloudGenie for FlexPod
CloudGenie for FlexPod is an application for Android and iPad that allows you to visually and intuitively manage the basic parameters of the entire infrastructure from one place. Below is a video demonstrating the capabilities of the application for 2011.

Cisco Expectations from Cloupia Takeover

Cisco expects Cloupia software to help better manage and automate the network, computing platform, storage systems, virtual environments, and operating system resources as a single infrastructure. Cisco UCS is a converged infrastructure and the company has made a big bet on providing converged infrastructures that combine computing resources. , storage system and network in one box. IT wants to get rid of dependencies that "close" them on a single vendor of solutions for Data Centers. "Solutions from one hands" locks up the buyer on one vendor, which leads to additional costs. Producers Cisco, NetApp, EMC and IBM saw in the trends of transition to a “converged infrastructure” the way for sales and promotion of their products on the enterprise market. Like other big companies, Cisco partners with other partner companies such as NetApp and VMWare sells joint (in differences from the "solution from one hands") solutions through their sales channels. Cisco writes in its blog on the purchase:
Cloupia’s Cisco acquisition adds the benefits of a Cisco datacenter strategy by providing a single management console for Cisco equipment and solutions from its partners, including FlexPod, VSPEX, and Vblock. Cloupia’s products will be integrated into Cisco's datacenter portfolio through UCS Manager, UCS Central and Nexus 1000v, strengthening the overall Cisco ecosystem strategy and providing open APIs for integration with the wider community of developers and partners.

CIAC & CUIC

Cisco already has in its portfolio a management tool for cloud solutions - CIAC . And as can be seen from the quotation above, both these CUIC and CIAC products will be integrated into one solution. So far we can only imagine the result of this merger, using the integration scheme below: image
