According to a very interesting April study of Flurry (top 200 smartphones),
69% of users prefer smartphones in the range 3.5 "- 4.9" . But today, one by one, shovels 5 "come out that do not fit in your pocket. And statistics show that there is no
limit to the increase in the average size of smartphones .
The race of screen sizes began in 2010 (see Engadget
's excellent historical review,
“The ever-expanding smartphone screen: how it became everyday” ), and now those who need a modern smartphone have to choose between shovels from 5 "to 7". This is not something that is difficult to put in a pocket - it is difficult to use with one hand, let alone increased fragility.

The GSM Arena site’s
Phone Finder smartphone search engine, if you select only 2 parameters: “Android phone” and “2 GB RAM”, offers
53 phones . However, if you filter them by the parameter “Screen size no more than 4.5”, then
only 5 models will remain. What is even sadder is that the characteristics of devices with screens ranging from 4.3 to 4.6 are usually worse (for example: no LTE, or little memory, or a bad screen, no memory card or low screen resolution, Gorilla Glass protection, a weak processor, or even worse - the lack of support for 3G band UMTS 900).
We can say that in 2013, manufacturers are guided by the rule: "Medium-sized smartphones - mediocre stuffing."
In GSM Arena they decided to take the initiative in their own hands, and urge the largest manufacturers of smartphones to stop ignoring the needs of people who need smart phones of a reasonable size, and at the same time with a decent configuration .Many modern smartphones do not fit in your pocket: (

The average screen size grows annually:

In 2013, the problem began to attract the attention of more and more people:
If the trend continues, the phones will have to be worn like this:

In the news
"Join our call to release more compact and productive smartphones on Android" GSM Arena offers to sign a petition, the results of which promise to discuss directly with device manufacturers. Worthy initiative!
What today can be considered compact and modern?
- Sizes of no more than Motorola RAZR i or Apple iPhone 5 , so that you can comfortably operate with one hand and comfortably carry in your pocket;
- 2GB of RAM;
- Screen from 4.2 to 4.5 with a reasonable resolution, like 720x1280;
- Snapdragon 600 chipset, Exynos 5 Octa;
- High quality camera;
- High-quality screen;
- The presence of protection Gorilla Glass;
- High-quality speaker + sound in headphones;
- Multiband UMTS (Europe + America)
- LTE support
- Weight up to 130 g
And now try to buy such a smartphone ... You are waiting for disappointments and the fight against compromises. Such characteristics can be found mainly in devices with a diagonal of 5 inches. That is the problem.
And what about the "Chinese"?
During this year, users hoped that many Chinese smartphones will be released on the attractive MTK6589 chipset, the distinguishing feature of which is the possibility of using 2x SIM cards at the same time, rather than alternately. However, at the moment it is very difficult to buy even a Chinese smartphone with 2Gb RAM:
Many Chinese manufacturers of low-end smartphones have long been morally ready to move to the 2 GB RAM bar, but there is one problem - incompatibility with the MT6589 platform. For the absolute majority of budgetary “Chinese”, this platform is already basic and indispensable, therefore, until now, companies such as JiaYu, iOcean and others only promise us devices with 2 GB of RAM, but in fact smartphones with only 1 GB of RAM go on sale.
Another point that should be paid close attention to with Chinese phones is the support of 3G frequencies. Such a great product, like the
Xiaomi Mi-2S , for example, having
top features comparable to the Nexus 4 (excellent screen 4.3, Quad-core 1.7 GHz Krait 300, 2GB) does not support
UMTS 900 (which means that
3G will not work well in premises and areas that, theoretically, cut off most of the buyers).
Manufacturers continue to increase screen sizes

In April, Samsung introduced two smartphones with a strikingly large display diagonal -
Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3 .
And where are the offers for those who need regular sizes, from 4 to 4.5 inches?If you are one of those who think that you need more compact smartphones, support the initiative of GSM Arena!
To: Android smartphone makers
Today we are witnessing how top smartphones are increasing in size literally before our eyes. We believe that you should not limit medium-sized devices to average performance. We urge you to review your line of mobile devices.
We firmly believe that top-end smartphones should not turn into mini-tablets, or, at least, users should have the right to use the latest equipment and programs in more compact medium-sized cases.
Manufacturers of smartphones on Android should not forget that the key characteristic of any phone is mobility (portability). We, mobile phone users, urge you to start producing medium-sized phones with top features.
Sincerely,
