"Sockets" from Jolla

Looking at this post and comments in it, I found that most people do not understand what it is all about, why Jolla so strongly focuses on its "sockets" and what these colorful pieces of plastic are so unique.

I ask those interested under the cat.

It’s no secret that the competition in the smartphone market is pretty tough, and even microsoft with a couple of Nokia, who are pouring huge amounts of money into Windows Phone, cannot bite off any part of the pie.
It seems in Jolla that they fully understand it and do not harbor the illusion that their undoubtedly fresh and relevant platform will easily and simply conquer the market. In 2013, good hardware and software are no longer enough for a young and ambitious company to go to the big world. Need an idea. And here that “panels” appear on the scene.
')
Each panel (or, according to the official presentation - the Other Half) may contain additional iron. The following things were officially mentioned or confirmed:
- enhanced battery
- gamepad
- more powerful flash
- qwerty keyboard
- wireless charger

No details about the interface between the phone itself and its second half yet, but Mark Dillon himself says that "everything is limited only by your imagination." Well, let's dream.
How do you like a mini-printer in your phone, which comes off at any moment and changes, let's say, to a reinforced battery?
What about a more powerful speaker that you can attach when traveling to the country?
The second display based on e-ink for reading books? Tempting?

In addition, it is mentioned that each half can have its own set of software in the appendage. This opens up even more interesting perspectives. For example Navitel or some other navigation software, sold in the form of panels with a good GPS-receiver. There are really millions of possibilities, and the only question is - is this enough to stir up the android-iphone world?

I really, really hope that's enough.

UPD: I do not claim that this idea is unique and will definitely be in demand. I just tried to bring it to the Russian-speaking users.
