US Army and Security

The US Army is looking more closely at the Macintosh in the face of increased security threats. After the hacker attacks on the Pentagon and on other organizations of the military-industrial complex, such as Boeing, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, the army increased its defense against hackers, and uses Macintosh. According to the military, there are far fewer exploits for Mac OS X than for Windows. The US Army has about 700,000 computers and servers, 20,000 are manufactured by Apple.

For many years, the main obstacles in choosing were the high cost and compatibility of Apple products. Now the most important is the issue of security, in spite of the price difference between a Macintosh and a similar PC. At the moment, it’s enough for the employee’s application to make a choice and ignore this difference. Xserve is very common now in the US Army and, according to the military, these are the most attacked resources, but they use the attacks for the Windows platform to attack them.

Previously, Macs were not compatible with such technology as Common Access Card (CAC) scanning , and now a program is being developed to support CAC on Macintosh computers, which should be ready by February next year. Soon after, one can say that the doors for Apple will open in many army departments.

Experts are skeptical of Macintosh, they are not as safe as they seem, referring to the fact that last year the number of patches released for Macs was 5 times more than for Windows. Although this opinion is strongly disputed. In addition, according to the Finnish company F-Secure , hackers are increasingly targeting Macs and over the last 2 months more than 100 malicious programs have been detected. ( source )
