This is perhaps difficult to remember: the European branch of the Free Software Foundation (FSFE) announced support for the initiative of Opera Software. In other words, one of the major free software organizations in the world came out in support of a commercial company. The explanation, in general, is quite simple: open standards are equally important for everyone, both for free software and commercial developers. FSFE President Georg Greve explained that although Opera Software does not develop free software products, the Fund largely agrees with the position of the Norwegians in matters of supporting open standards. Georg also explained that many free browsers, including Firefox and Konqueror, also suffer from the monopoly of Microsoft and therefore should strongly support Opera Software in achieving fair competition in the browser market. FSFE also did not confine itself to words of support, but sent a corresponding letter to the European Commission.
