Programs for Android forbidden to update bypassing Google Play
Google updated the agreement with the developers, adding a special item addressed to the developers who are trying to update, change or replace the APK applications on their own or using third-party services. This new item, introduced in the “Dangerous Products” section, specifically says that no application with Google Play can be updated in any other way except through the Google Play update mechanism. You can understand this Google policy due to increased concerns about malware and security.
No developer or company was named specifically, but after discussing this note, Facebook comes to mind. Everyone remembers how the Facebook application was updated a month or so ago, offering to install a new build, but not through Google Play? It scared a lot of Android users around the world, provoking open discussions all over the internet to find out if it’s safe. Personally, I don’t know other apps that did this, but I’m sure there are a lot of them and Facebook is not alone.
