Computer as a means of uselessness

But you think about how much power in your computer disappears in vain? Yesterday I watched a DVD with Pixar studio short films: the first one was created on machines one hundred times weaker than the current PDAs. And now, under our tables, the teraflops machine chases away empty bars - and in the best case spends energy on drawing buttons in the Word. And in general, the air warms.

In my childhood, I somehow found a project that used the power of thousands of home computers to calculate one big and important task - the selection of proteins, for example, to create a cancer drug or to decipher the genome. This task is characterized by the fact that you need to choose one of the millions of possible proteins (a combination of amino acids) that will fit this one according to certain parameters. The task is simply divided into a number of independent calculators - simply indicating to whom to try which proteins. Special software installed on computers willing to participate, receives small puzzles from the server (for several hours), processes them and returns results. Recently, the geekshack geeks again led me on this topic.

There are a lot of projects of distributed computing. This is the most well-known SETI @ Home (search for an alien mind by analyzing data from radio telescopes to detect duplicate signals), and distributed hacking codes (somehow the whole world broke a long code and received a non-sickly prize amount for this), and various other tasks ( quantum, cryptographic, mathematical, meteorological ...). I like the World Community Grid most of all, I advertise it, but you can choose any.

So, I invite everyone to participate! Go to www.worldcommunitygrid.org , register and download the BOINC client for your platform. When installing the client will offer to choose a project: to predict the weather ? Play chess games? Looking for big prime numbers? Search for collisions in cryptographic algorithms? Simulate fluid? Choose to your liking. I personally stay on World Community Grid and perform their tasks - drugs, weather. In return, I get a paypal - rating among other users, a beautiful screensaver (these are youth, girls to attract: see what kind of science I’m doing) and a sense of intelligent machine operation (or else she was chasing a cooler).

')

There are only two side effects. The first is to increase the heat transfer and power consumption of the computer due to the constant use of the processor (although the background task does not interfere with the basic work of the user). Here you just have to be careful and not allow the program to work too actively on a laptop, especially battery-powered. You can adjust the degree of computer use:

And the second side effect is the feeling that your computer in its short life has already brought more benefit to humanity than you. The way to fight is to leave the computer on the calculations of proteins and go pancake to benefit.
