Ukrainian development market: who, how much and how much
According to the materials of our report on RIT2013.

According to various estimates, there are 40-60 thousand developers in our country. These are programmers, testers, PMs, etc., oo without system administrators and abstract IT specialists. There are no exact numbers.
70 percent of these 40-60 thousand one way or another working for outsourcing. Someone sitting in the office of EPAM or Luxoft, someone in a smaller company. A huge number of people are sitting "by apartment" working through oDesk and similar exchanges.
Developers are everywhere, but probably 80% live and work in one of five cities: Kiev, Lvov, Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk, Odessa.
Twice a year we update our TOP25 rating of the largest software companies. From the TOP25 non-outsourcing companies of the unit: Terrasoft, Software MacKiev, AM SOFT, Softline, Gameloft. In the TOP5 companies employed 10 thousand developers. More than Facebook!
The main customers are Europe and the USA. This means good English, a trip to the client “on site” and a tractor (about this separately).
This is not always “pure” outsourcing. For three years, the Ukrainian office of Samsung has grown from zero to 1000 engineers. Yandex has a large office in Simferopol (layout, yes).
The labor market for developers is very globalized, not tied to the Ukrainian realities and GDP (see above about outsourcing). As a result, the cries of programmers zazhralis, and doctors live on a beggarly salary do not receive a special response.
$ 4500 - "top" salary developer in Kiev. Above one. Expeditious developers with 3+ years of experience - $ 2500-4000. On jobs.dou.ua/salaries/ a detailed analyst is collected, for all possible cuts.
While it is unlikely that the shortage of personnel will disappear, which means that wages will continue to grow by 5-10% per year.
In the capital, as expected, the salaries are the highest, but Lviv and Odessa are not far behind. In Kharkov and Dnepropetrovsk wages are 20-30% lower. In smaller cities, remote work through oDesk and other exchanges is more popular than office space. Yes, and at times more profitable.
A programmer is a sought-after profession. And very mobile. So our compatriots go and go. For interesting projects, for a quiet life, for adventure.
From the employer's point of view, the risk that the best developer will be lured away by a competitor by + $ 500 in salary is small. At least it is clear from him how to defend himself. It’s almost impossible to defend oneself on the Facebook offer, unless it is time to issue a super-attractive mortgage.
Some (DAXX, Luxoft, EPAM) directly promise to help organize the "evacuation", having worked a year or two or three under the on-site contract. Companies like Paypal, Amazon, Facebook, Mail.Ru come to Kiev and hold recruiting sessions.
Mobile, Front-end, Java, .NET, PHP. There are some embedded / DSP.
