The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has published the
first set of global IPTV standards , developed on the basis of proposals from leading service providers and manufacturers such as Huawei, France Telecom, Alcatel-Lucent, and others.
The standard set includes 21 documents covering architecture, quality of service, security, digital rights management (DRM), addressing, protocols, metadata, and software.
Telecom operators consider IPTV as one of the main elements of a package of voice, video and data services, the so-called "triple service". Standardization is necessary if service providers want to offer high-quality value-added products, such as VoD, which will inevitably put the market in motion.
Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, Malcolm Johnson, said: “Standards are crucial for achieving IPTV of their market potential and reaching a global audience.”
