Choosing a smartphone, it is quite difficult to understand how good his photo part is. Probably the only place where seriously approached this issue - the famous dpreview.com. But while there are fewer reviews than fingers. Yes, and reviews, as a rule, relative. What about the fact that in some conditions my device removes a little worse / better than another?
Looking at all this, I thought, what's the point of comparing the cameras of smartphones with each other? It is necessary to understand how generally the camera of the smartphone is good. Solution: you need to shoot the same thing on the Nexus 4 and Canon 5d Mark II! I am not an innovator in this business, I remember there was a comparison of iPhone 4 with Canon 5D. Of course, this is not about finding out who is better off. Canon acts as a reference against which the Nexus 4 is rated.

Comparison conditions
For comparison, I chose the square fragments of two photos. Canon shot with a focal length of 28mm. The photo was reduced from 21 megapixels, to the size of the corresponding Nexus. Everything is on the machine both there and there, but Canon has made an exposure correction of -2/3 steps.

My conclusion
The quality of the photos that the Nexus 4 is capable of producing, as well as any modern smartphone, is really cool. Geeks let them continue to catch fleas in sprinkles and compare smartphones with each other. Of course, for professional use, you can't do without a DSLR, but for a home for a family, a smartphone camera is enough. But the need to look at intermediate solutions (soapboxes, mirrorless) can be questioned. The quality will not be much different about the smartphone. But it is clear that this is my subjective opinion.
Addition
I often miss the wide angle. Telephoto lenses didn’t take hold somehow, but it’s very necessary to shoot a panorama. In Nexus 4 there is a function "Photosphere", which allows you to shoot a spherical panorama in automatic mode.
