The fastest home internet is in Japan (2 Gbit / s)

The other day it became known that the Japanese provider So-net Entertainment added to its service package a connection to the Network at speeds up to 2 Gbit / s. And this is the home Internet, and not any pilot project developed by the research institute. In this case, Sony is a partner. The new high-speed connection service was named Nuro and is already available for residents of Tokyo + residents of several neighboring prefectures.

According to the company's management, this package is designed not only for households, but also for owners of the restaurant business and other small companies. At the same time, the cost of the package is not so high: $ 51 per month when concluding a contract for 2 years (plus about the same for installation of equipment, one-time). At the same time, we all know what “up to 2 Gbit / s” can mean (well, 10 Mbit / s is also “do”, and some domestic providers are actively using this technique). However, in the case of the Japanese, the situation is slightly different.

In this particular case, “up to 2 Gbit / s” means that the provider gives a guarantee for download at a speed of about 2 Gbit / s, but sending data from the user will take place at a speed not exceeding 1 Gbit / s. The project itself was made possible through the development and implementation of an optical receiver (the technology itself is based on GPON / Gigabit-capable Passive Optics Networks), which “expands” the connection channel to the specified speeds. The device connects directly to the optics, converting optical / light signals into electrical ones.

In addition to the above companies, the authorities also took part in the project, which provided partial funding for the project on deploying fiber optic infrastructure in the city and prefectures.
