FireWire S3200: 3.2 Gbps

The IEEE 1394 Trade Association has released information about the new version of the FireWire format. According to the standard specification, called the S3200, the maximum data transfer rate will be 3.2 Gbps per second or 400 MB per second, which is four times faster than the previous version of FireWire 800 (800 Mbps, 100 MB per second).

The advantage of the new version of the standard is not only speed. Due to the fact that the S3200 keeps the data transmission and control protocols unchanged (FireWire 800), hardware and software developers will be able to switch to the production of equipment adapted to the use of the S3200 without too much difficulty.

IEEE 1394 plans to ratify the standard in February, which will allow manufacturers to release new equipment already in 2008.
