4G on smartphones: in Russia from 04/10/2013
Yesterday I participated in the work of the press club dedicated to the launch of 4G on smartphones.
Megaphone managed the impossible: journalists and representatives of most smartphone manufacturers (HTC, Huawei, Nokia, Samsung, Sony, ZTE) and mobile chipsets (Intel, Quallcom) gathered in one room. The conversation was very interesting.

Now 4G Internet can be used not only with the help of special modems and routers, but directly on smartphones and tablets that support the Russian 4G standard. Due to legal problems, voice over 4G VoLTE (Voice over LTE) is not yet used (all 4G licenses only allow data transfer), so the Internet traffic goes through 4G, and when you call, your smartphone switches to 3G or 2G. In order to use LTE on a smartphone, you need to connect the Internet option with 4G support. Previously, 4G support was only in the expensive options of unlimited Internet - from 990 rubles per month for 10GB (“Internet L”) to 2990 rubles per month for 100 GB (“Internet 4XL”).
From today, 4G support has appeared in the cheapest option “Internet XS” - 190 rubles per month, 1.5 GB, 50 MB per day without speed limit. 4G support is expected to appear in the remaining options.
The usual sim card can now be exchanged for 4G USIM with 4G support in Megafon offices for free.
Today, MegaFon 4G supports nine smartphones - HTC One, HTC One SV, Nokia Lumia 920, Nokia Lumia 820, Sony Xperia V, Sony Xperia Z, Sony Xperia ZL, LG Optimus G, Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE MegaFon Edition and Samsung Galaxy Tablet Tab 8.9 LTE ​​MegaFon Edition.
It is alleged that the average speed of 4G Internet in Moscow is now 10-20 Mbit / s. For high speed inevitably have to pay increased energy consumption. Exact numbers were not mentioned, but according to the experience of those who have already used the new technology, in 4G mode, the battery sits 10-15% faster than in 3G.
I want to note that the advantage of 4G is not only in speed. Due to lower pings, it becomes possible to use such Internet for online games. In 2013-2014, Megafon plans to invest 15 billion rubles in the development of 4G networks. According to forecasts, by 2015, the share of 4G smartphones in total sales will exceed 15%.
Starting 4G on smartphones has a useful side effect: due to the fact that the cheap Internet XS option now works with 4G, those who bought 4G modems a year ago and then abandoned the use of 4G due to high tariffs (for example, I) can use 4G again.
