Today, Opera distributed a press release in which it reports a complaint against Microsoft to the European Commission. Norwegian developers want to force MS to stop using their dominant position on the desktop PC market to impose Internet Explorer and to follow web standards. Opera’s complaint describes how Microsoft deprives users of a real choice, how it uses OS popularity to promote its browser. The essence of the requirements of the Norwegians comes to two things:
Microsoft should stop supplying the operating system with Internet Explorer and / or include pre-installed versions of alternative developers' browsers. This, according to Opera, will provide users with a real choice;
When developing a browser, Microsoft must follow current industry standards. There was an unpleasant situation when site creators are guided by non-existing standards, and how their site will look in browsers with a large market share, other browsers are ignored.
In essence, the Norwegians decided only to repeat the success achieved by the creators of programs for listening to music. In 2004, they achieved the decision of the European Commission, according to which Microsoft was recognized as a monopolist in the development of media players. MS ordered to pay a fine of 497 million euros, and the corporation itself began shipping operating systems to EU countries without Windows Media Player. ')
Attempts to "cut out" Internet Explorer from Windows have been made by the US authorities. An oversight commission was established that has access to the source codes. Her term of work was set at five years, but a month ago was extended for another two years.
