The .ru domain became the most popular national TLD in September 2011, and since then it has continuously increased its popularity. The Russian language is used not only on 89.8% of sites in the domain zone .ru, but also on 88.7% of sites using the domain of the former USSR .su (which, logically, should lose popularity, but in practice the situation is exactly the opposite). Russian is also the most frequently used language in the Internet space of several post-Soviet republics: it is used by 79.0% of the websites of Ukraine, 86.9% of the websites of Belarus, 84.0% of the websites of Kazakhstan, 79.6% of the websites of Uzbekistan, 75.9 % of Kyrgyzstan sites and 81.8% of Tajikistan sites.

On popular resources, the position of the Russian language is weaker. It is only 6th in terms of frequency of use on the thousand most visited Internet sites, followed by English, Chinese, French, German and Japanese.

The majority (62.0%) of Russian-language sites now use UTF-8 encoding, 37.5% of Russian pages use Windows-1251, and KOI8-R is still used on 0.4% of RuNet pages.

Analyzing trends, we can conclude that in the foreseeable future Russian will remain in second place. In perspective, the most logical candidate for the position of the second most popular language of the web is Chinese; however, at the moment its lead is still significant.
